Mary's Mosaic is a photograph of the Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu, a Roman Catholic church on the Mount Zion, Jerusalem. The artist photographed the window, printed it larger than life, painted her model into the printed image of the mosaic archway, and re photographed it from the studio. This artworks stands as a statement to the hidden voices and stories of women throughout religious history and the cultural inequality that has long been sanctified through these old doctrines.
The name of this piece, Mary's Mosaic, represents Mary Magdalene, whose love and wisdom raised Jesus into his enlightened awakenings and resurrection - a reminder that the sacred balance of the masculine and feminine, both within oneself and between partners, is the pathway to peace and possibly heaven on earth.
This young woman painted into the church, covers her face and hair in sacred reverence and prayer, whilst boldly standing to merge into the sacred architecture of her faith. Brought up in a Catholic family, she was taught to smile and be pleasing to people, not to speak out of turn and to accept the status quo. As she grew up, she discovered many occasions for which her education felt oppressive, even in her normalised secular society. The distortion of the wall that evolved naturally with the curve of her feminine form, represents the distortion born out of doctrines that determine what 'good woman' is in the eyes of 'god'.
"Hidden in my simplicity are the naked shoulders I bare, witness me in intimacy, the place where I let myself be seen, draped in stained glass, the songs of prayer boom through the voices of men that hold me tightly within their allowances. I am conditional to man, I serve the great mission of prayer and emancipation, my body belongs to the system that adorns me and chastises me according to their rules and regulations. I represent the containment of the doctrines and dream of shattering the illusion that god is anywhere to be found anywhere but within all of natures glory.
*All models in this project are anonymous and have offered their body canvas to the movement of Women. Life. Freedom.
