Set within the stained glass windows of the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem’s Old City, a Jewish woman is painted into the sacred space. Her bare shoulders — simple, innocent — remind us of the strict dress codes imposed to ensure the body remains covered, lest it “arouse” desire.
Yet in the laws of balance, the demonisation of sexuality has not purified humanity; it has instead driven desire underground, fueling a dangerous underworld of perverse consumerism. What appears innocent here is also an indictment of naivety — of a humanity led astray by moralistic codes of “goodness” that deny the body’s truth.
In this work, an everyday Jewish woman merges with sacred architecture to make her silent stand — a subtle but undeniable voice in the movement back toward balance.
