Queen Qubbat
This Iranian refugee stands tall and proud.
When everything is already being risked, there is nothing left to lose.
As part of this series, women stand bare and visible in their invisibility, cloaked with taboo and charged with defiance - because, there is never, EVER an excuse for violence against women - violence that is not defensive, is blasphemous. Art is expression, freedom is our right, this is our say.
This piece shines from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, where Islamic tradition says the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Night Journey, and where Jewish tradition places the ancient Holy of Holies of the First and Second Temples- the latter destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.
Between 685 and 691 CE, the Dome of the Rock was raised upon the ancient foundations of the Temple Mount, carrying within its octagonal walls the weight of prophecy, empire, and devotion. Into this layered history, a woman steps forward as living witness. Her revealed beauty, the most taboo of all.
Our golden girl is a survivor of the regime that strangled her country before she could even know its freedom. She offered her body as canvas in unflinching solidarity with the call: WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM. Painted into ancient walls, she becomes both shield and declaration of SAFETY FOR ALL WOMEN EVERYWHERE NOW.
It is time for the Goddess to shake down the apples of oppression, stolen from the Tree of Life. For there is no greater blasphemy than the killing, raping, and silencing of women.
We say NO to rape.
We say NO to honour killings.
We say NO to domestic violence.
We say NO to being hidden, erased, and controlled.
We say NO to oppressive regimes that cloak brutality in the name of God.This is our life.
This is our fight.
We are the women of the world.
